Yaren is the de facto capital of Nauru, the world's smallest island nation at just 21 km², and one of the world's least-visited countries. In the 1970s, Nauru was the world's wealthiest nation per capita, its citizens paying no taxes and receiving free education, healthcare, and housing from phosphate mining royalties. The phosphate has now been nearly exhausted, leaving 80% of the island's interior as a barren landscape of jagged coral limestone pinnacles, one of the world's most extraordinary examples of resource curse. The coastal ring remains beautiful, with Anibare Bay being a stunning arc of white sand. Nauru is also known for its offshore detention centre operated for Australia.
