Palikir Travel Safety Guide — Micronesia
Safety Score: 8.5/10 · Value: 8/10 · Beauty: 7.8/10
Palikir is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), a Compact of Free Association nation with the United States spread across 607 islands in the western Pacific. The capital sits on Pohnpei island, one of the wettest places on Earth (7,600mm annual rainfall) covered in dense jungle. Pohnpei is home to Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the ancient world's greatest mysteries: a ruined city of 92 artificial islands built from massive basalt logs between 1200–1500 CE, in the open ocean. Nobody knows how the basalt was transported. FSM citizens can live and work in the US without a visa under the Compact of Free Association.
