South Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati (pronounced 'Kiribas'), a Micronesian nation of 33 coral atolls and reef islands spanning 3.5 million km² of Pacific Ocean, straddling both the equator and the International Date Line. Kiribati made its position straddle the date line in 1995 so that the entire nation would share the same calendar day. The country faces the most severe existential threat from sea level rise of any nation, entire islands are already being prepared for abandonment. Betio island on South Tarawa was the site of the Battle of Tarawa (November 1943), one of WWII's most ferocious engagements: 1,000 US Marines and nearly 5,000 Japanese defenders died in 76 hours fighting over 1 square mile.
