Sana'a Travel Safety Guide — Yemen
Safety Score: 2.5/10 · Value: 8.5/10 · Beauty: 8.4/10
Sana'a is the official capital of Yemen, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities with a UNESCO World Heritage old city of extraordinary 8–9 storey tower houses built from dark basalt stone and decorated with elaborate white gypsum geometric patterns. Yemen has been in devastating civil war since 2015 between Houthi forces (controlling Sana'a and much of the north) and the internationally recognised government (based in Aden). The conflict, combined with a Saudi-led coalition blockade, has created what the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis, 21 million people in need of aid. Socotra Island (UNESCO, 2008) is an extraordinary biodiversity hotspot with 37% endemic species including the Dragon Blood Tree found nowhere else.
