Aswan is Egypt's southernmost major city and arguably the country's most beautiful — the Nile here is wide, slow, and dotted with golden granite islands. It is the gateway to Nubian culture (the ancient indigenous civilisation of the Nile valley, with rich traditions of music, crafts, and deep hospitality) and the starting point for Nile cruises toward Luxor. Abu Simbel — the colossal temples of Ramesses II (moved stone by stone to save them from the Aswan High Dam's lake) — is a 3-hour desert drive south. The felucca sunset cruise is among the most memorable experiences in all of Egypt.
