Taipei is one of Asia's most likeable cities, safe, clean, green and remarkably easy for first-time visitors. Ringed by misty mountains and hot springs, the capital pairs the soaring Taipei 101 tower and slick MRT metro with a deep food culture and some of the friendliest locals you'll meet anywhere. The city's soul is in its night markets, Shilin, Raohe and Ningxia, where you graze on stinky tofu, oyster omelettes, pepper buns and bubble tea (invented in Taiwan). By day, explore the world-class National Palace Museum, sip oolong in the tea houses of Maokong, or hike Elephant Mountain for the classic skyline shot. Taipei is also a brilliant base: Jiufen's lantern-lit lanes, the geothermal Beitou hot springs and the gorge scenery of Yangmingshan are all short trips away. Expect humid heat from May to September and a typhoon season in late summer; autumn and spring are the most comfortable times to visit.
