Guilin is one of China's most visited destinations, and for good reason. The landscape around the Li River is among the most beautiful on Earth: thousands of impossibly steep limestone karst peaks rising from flat paddy fields, their reflections doubling the spectacle in the river below. The 20 RMB note depicts the famous Xingping scenery near Guilin. The city itself is a pleasant base, but the real draws are the Li River cruise to Yangshuo (4 hours of extraordinary scenery), Reed Flute Cave's illuminated stalactites, and the rural countryside around Xingping and Longji rice terraces.
