São Tomé is the capital of São Tomé and Príncipe, a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Gabon, uninhabited until Portuguese arrival in 1470. The islands were the world's leading cocoa and sugar producer in the 16th and early 20th centuries, built on enslaved African labour, leaving extraordinary Portuguese plantation estates (roças) now crumbling in the jungle. The islands have exceptional biodiversity, 28 endemic bird species, ancient rainforest, and Pico Cão Grande (a 663m volcanic needle rising from the forest). Praia Jalé on the south coast is one of Africa's most important nesting beaches for leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles.
