Cotonou is the economic capital and largest city of Benin, a country with extraordinary historical significance as the birthplace of Vodou (Voodoo), which was exported to the Americas via the slave trade. The former Kingdom of Dahomey (centred at Abomey, UNESCO) was one of West Africa's most powerful pre-colonial states. Cotonou itself is a chaotic, energetic port city with one of West Africa's largest markets (Dantokpa), a surprisingly strong contemporary art scene anchored by the Fondation Zinsou, and the Zémidjan motorbike-taxis that are the city's defining feature. Benin is stable and relatively safe by West African standards.
