Malabo is the capital of Equatorial Guinea, Africa's only Spanish-speaking country and one of the continent's strangest political situations. The country discovered offshore oil in 1995 and became one of sub-Saharan Africa's highest per-capita GDP nations almost overnight, yet this wealth has benefited very few. Malabo sits on Bioko Island, an ancient volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea, rising to Pico Basile at 3,011m. The island has extraordinary biodiversity: endemic primates (drill monkeys, Bioko black colobus), sea turtle nesting beaches, and montane rainforest. The city has attractive Spanish colonial architecture and a surreal mix of extreme oil wealth and basic services.
