Mogadishu Travel Safety Guide — Somalia
Safety Score: 3.5/10 · Value: 8/10 · Beauty: 5.6/10
Mogadishu is the capital of Somalia, a country that experienced state collapse in 1991 and civil war for over two decades. The city is slowly rebuilding under the Federal Government of Somalia, with the African Union Mission providing security support. In its pre-war heyday, Mogadishu was known as the 'White Pearl of the Indian Ocean' for its beautiful Italian colonial architecture and pristine beaches. Lido Beach, an extraordinary stretch of Indian Ocean beach, is now returning as a social hub for residents. The city has a vibrant, resilient population and incredible food culture based around rice, camel meat, and fresh seafood. Travel requires serious security preparation and is not recommended for leisure tourists.
