Mandalay was the last royal capital of Burma before the British annexation in 1885 and remains the country's cultural and religious epicentre. The Royal Palace (reconstructed), Mandalay Hill with its covered stairway of shrines, and the extraordinary concentration of teak monasteries (Shwenandaw being the finest surviving example of traditional Burmese carved teak) make the city compelling. U Bein Bridge, a 1.2km teak walkway across Taungthaman Lake built in 1849 from repurposed royal palace teak, is Myanmar's most iconic image.
