Amritsar is the spiritual capital of Sikhism and home to Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) — the most sacred shrine in the Sikh faith and one of the most beautiful religious buildings on Earth. The temple's gold-plated sanctum rises from the centre of a sacred pool (Amrit Sarovar) and is surrounded by a white marble causeway. The langar (community kitchen) feeds 100,000 people daily for free, regardless of faith — the largest free kitchen in the world. The Wagah Border ceremony (30km west) is unmissable.
