Agra's reason for existence is the Taj Mahal — the white marble mausoleum built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632–1648 as a monument to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in childbirth. The Taj is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and arguably the most beautiful building ever constructed: perfect symmetry, inlaid with 28 types of precious and semi-precious stones, the dome reflected in the long pool at sunrise. Agra Fort (another UNESCO site) and the abandoned red-sandstone city of Fatehpur Sikri (40km) round out an extraordinary heritage cluster.
