What Travelers Say About Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the laid-back Cambodian town that serves as the base for exploring the temples of Angkor, the crowning achievement of the Khmer Empire. Despite the millions who pass through, it has kept a relaxed, friendly character — a walkable center, riverside cafes, and some of Southeast Asia's most genuine hospitality. By day you temple-hop; by night you wander markets and lantern-lit streets.
The Angkor Archaeological Park is the reason to come. Catch sunrise over the iconic five towers of Angkor Wat, lose yourself among the carved faces of the Bayon at Angkor Thom, and marvel at Ta Prohm, where strangler-fig roots devour the stones (of Tomb Raider fame). Buy a multi-day pass and rent a tuk-tuk driver to range farther to Banteay Srei's pink sandstone carvings or the floating villages of Tonlé Sap lake.
Back in town, the buzzing Pub Street and the Old Market (Psar Chas) anchor the nightlife and shopping. Eat fish amok (coconut curry steamed in banana leaf), lok lak, and fresh spring rolls, and try a sociable Khmer barbecue. Tip: start temple days before dawn to beat heat and crowds, dress modestly to enter temples, carry cash and your passport photo for the pass, and tip your tuk-tuk driver well.
