What Travelers Say About Milan
Milan is Italy’s economic powerhouse and global fashion capital — a sleek, fast-moving northern city that feels more buttoned-up and business-minded than Rome or Florence. It’s a place of designer boutiques, aperitivo bars, contemporary art and serious money, anchored by one of the world’s greatest Gothic cathedrals, the Duomo. First-time visitors sometimes find it less obviously “pretty” than other Italian cities, but Milan rewards those who look closer.
The headline sights cluster in a compact, walkable centre: the marble-laced Duomo and its rooftop terraces, the glittering Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade, La Scala opera house, and Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (book weeks ahead). Beyond the centre, the Navigli canal district comes alive at night with bars and restaurants, while the Brera quarter offers artsy lanes and the Quadrilatero della Moda delivers the world’s top fashion houses.
Milan is safe, modern and supremely well-connected — its metro, trams and two airports make it the gateway to northern Italy, the Italian Lakes (Como, Maggiore) and the Alps. Watch for pickpockets around the Duomo, the central station and on busy trams, but otherwise it’s an easy, polished city to explore.
