A friendly local (often near tourist sites) befriends you and eventually brings you to a carpet shop owned by his 'family' or 'cousin'. Tea is served and social pressure builds to purchase. Carpets are genuine but grossly overpriced at tourist rates. Never feel obligated to buy anything.
Taxi Scams (Short Change & Routes)high
Istanbul taxis sometimes take longer routes and some drivers exchange your ₺200 note for a ₺20 note and claim you 'gave the wrong note'. Always have small denomination lira. Use BiTaksi or InDriver apps for transparent pricing. The Metro is excellent for most tourist routes.
Shoe Shine Drop Scammedium
A shoe shiner drops his brush in front of you. When you pick it up and return it, he insists on shining your shoes as a 'thank you' then demands excessive payment. If someone drops anything near you, simply walk past — do not pick it up.
Fake Perfume & Designer Goods in Grand Bazaarmedium
The Grand Bazaar contains both genuine artisan goods and counterfeit products. Branded perfumes, watches, and sunglasses are almost certainly fake. Genuine Turkish goods (ceramics, hand-woven textiles, copper) are authentic. Research what authentic Turkish crafts look like before visiting.
