Ho Chi Minh City, still called Saigon by locals, is Vietnam's pulsing economic engine — louder, hotter, and more frenetic than Hanoi. Rivers of motorbikes flood the streets, glass towers rise beside French-era cathedrals, and rooftop bars look down on a skyline that reinvents itself yearly. It's a city of relentless energy and entrepreneurial hustle, best understood by simply wading into the chaos. Start in District 1 with the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the ornate Central Post Office, and the Reunification Palace, frozen in 1975. The War Remnants Museum is sobering but essential. Wander the lantern-lit backpacker strip of Bui Vien, browse Ben Thanh Market, and venture out to the Cu Chi Tunnels for a visceral history lesson. Districts 3 and 7 offer leafier, more local rhythms away from the tourist core. The food is extraordinary and absurdly cheap. Slurp pho and bun bo, devour banh mi from a sidewalk cart, and sit on a tiny plastic stool for com tam (broken rice) with grilled pork. Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk is a religion here — try the egg coffee too. Cross the street with steady, predictable steps and the bikes will flow around you; hesitation is what causes accidents.
