What Travelers Say About Doha

Doha is Qatar's compact, ambitious capital — a Gulf city that has rocketed from pearl-fishing town to gleaming skyline in a single generation. The standout is the I.M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art and its waterfront park, while the restored Souq Waqif offers a more atmospheric, traditional counterpoint of spice stalls, shisha cafés and falcon shops. It is extremely safe, clean and orderly, with very low crime and a smooth new metro that connects the airport, downtown and the cultural districts cheaply. As a conservative Muslim country, dress is more modest than in Dubai, alcohol is restricted to licensed hotels, and public behaviour is expected to be respectful — but tourists are made very welcome. The 2022 World Cup left behind excellent infrastructure and hotels. The waterfront Corniche, the man-made Pearl-Qatar district and the sand dunes of the 'Inland Sea' at Khor Al Adaid are the signature experiences. As across the Gulf, October to April is the only comfortable window; summers are searingly hot and humid.

Common Scams in Doha

Alcohol Restrictions & Strict Lawshigh
Qatar is an Islamic state — alcohol is only available at licensed hotel bars and restaurants (not souqs or public areas). Homosexuality is illegal. Public displays of affection can result in arrest. During Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is prohibited even for non-Muslims.
Taxi Overcharginglow
Doha taxis are metered but some drivers quote flat rates that exceed the meter. Use Uber or Karwa (official Doha taxi app) for transparent pricing. The Doha Metro is excellent and covers all major tourist sites.
