Security Situation — Register with Embassyhigh
Baghdad's security has improved dramatically since 2008 but isolated attacks (including rocket attacks on the Green Zone and car bombs in commercial areas) still occur. Most Western governments advise 'exercise a high degree of caution' for Baghdad city, and 'do not travel' for many other Iraqi regions. Always register with your country's embassy before arrival, avoid large crowds and government buildings, and stay updated on the US State Department and equivalent advisories.
Extreme Summer Heat (May–September)high
Baghdad experiences some of the world's highest recorded temperatures — summer 2023 saw sustained temperatures above 50°C (122°F), with the city officially recording 51°C. Heat stroke and dehydration are genuine medical emergencies at these temperatures; outdoor activity is dangerous for unacclimatised visitors. If visiting in summer, plan all outdoor activities before 9 AM or after 6 PM, carry 3+ litres of water at all times, and ensure your accommodation has reliable air conditioning.
