Pyongyang is the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), one of the world's most isolated states under the Kim dynasty since 1948. The city is a carefully constructed showcase of socialist achievement: broad boulevards, socialist monuments, the Kumsusan mausoleum, and the Juche Tower. Before tourism was suspended in January 2020 due to COVID-19, all visitors were required to use state-approved tour operators, had no independent movement, and were accompanied by government guides at all times. The experience was unlike anywhere else, simultaneously fascinating for its unique society and deeply unsettling for its total control. Tourism remains suspended as of 2024.
