Busan is South Korea's second-biggest city and its main port, spread along the southeast coast where steep green mountains run straight down to the sea. A lot of the city's character comes from the Korean War, when Busan was never captured and filled up with refugees who built whole neighbourhoods up the hillsides. Gamcheon Culture Village, now famous for its rows of pastel houses, started as one of those settlements. The mood here is more relaxed than Seoul, and locals are known for being warm and blunt, with a strong regional accent you'll pick up in the markets. Days revolve around the beaches at Haeundae and Gwangalli, fresh seafood at Jagalchi, and hot springs a short subway ride from the sand. It's safe, easy to get around, and cheaper than most visitors expect.
