Haiti was the world's first Black republic and the first Caribbean nation to gain independence (1804), achieved through the only successful slave revolution in history. Port-au-Prince is a city of extraordinary cultural richness, Haitian art, Vodou spirituality, Creole cuisine, and rara music are globally significant contributions. However, Port-au-Prince is currently one of the world's most dangerous cities, with gang control over large portions of the city following the 2021 presidential assassination and subsequent political collapse. Most governments advise do not travel. The Citadelle (UNESCO, in northern Haiti) remains one of the Caribbean's greatest monuments.
