Barranquilla Travel Safety Guide — Colombia
Safety Score: 6/10 · Value: 8.5/10 · Beauty: 6.1/10
Barranquilla does not get much international attention, but Colombians know it well. It is home to the country's biggest carnival, a four-day party in February that UNESCO lists as cultural heritage and that ranks second only to Rio. It is also the birthplace of cumbia music and of Shakira. Sitting where the Magdalena River meets the Caribbean, it has a hot, easygoing port-city feel that is quite different from Bogotá or Medellín. Outside carnival it is more of a stopover than a sight in itself, but the warmth and the food make it worth a pause.
