Pattaya is Thailand's most unapologetic resort city, a two-hour drive from Bangkok on the Gulf coast. Once a sleepy fishing village turned R&R hub during the Vietnam War, it grew into a sprawling, high-energy destination famous for its raucous Walking Street nightlife, go-go bars, and around-the-clock buzz. But that's only one side, Pattaya has spent years reinventing itself for families and weekenders too. Beyond the neon, there's plenty to do. Boats from Bali Hai pier reach Koh Larn (Coral Island) for clearer water and beach time. Inland you'll find the genuinely stunning Sanctuary of Truth, an all-teak carved temple by the sea, the colorful Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, the Tiffany's cabaret shows, and the giant Buddha at Wat Phra Yai on the hill. Jomtien Beach to the south is calmer and more low-key than the main strip. Food ranges from cheap, excellent seafood at Naklua market to a huge spread of international restaurants catering to expats and tourists. Try grilled prawns by the water, then cool off with mango sticky rice. Tip: stay in Jomtien or Wong Amat for a quieter base, use the cheap baht-bus (songthaew) along fixed routes, and agree fares before riding motorbike taxis.
