Monrovia is the capital of Liberia, the only African country never formally colonised, founded in 1847 by freed American slaves repatriated by the American Colonization Society. Named after US President James Monroe, the city has deep American cultural influences: English is the official language, the currency used to be the US dollar, and pre-war Liberia had strong American institutional ties. Liberia endured devastating civil wars (1989–1996, 1999–2003) under warlords including Charles Taylor, but has rebuilt significantly. Monrovia is now functional and relatively safe, with some of Atlantic West Africa's most undeveloped beaches nearby.
