Conakry Travel Safety Guide — Guinea
Safety Score: 5.5/10 · Value: 8/10 · Beauty: 5.6/10
Conakry is the capital of Guinea, a country with extraordinary mineral wealth (world's largest bauxite reserves, significant gold and diamonds) but one of Africa's lowest HDI scores. The city sits on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Atlantic, giving it a distinctive geography. Guinea has a rich musical heritage, it was the birthplace of Afrojuju and influenced much of West African music; Miriam Makeba and many influential musicians performed here. A military coup in September 2021 brought Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya to power. The political situation requires monitoring but Conakry functions as a normal city.
