Damascus Travel Safety Guide — Syria
Safety Score: 4/10 · Value: 8/10 · Beauty: 6.7/10
Damascus (Dimashq) claims to be the world's oldest continuously inhabited city, human settlement here dates back 11,000 years. The UNESCO-listed Old City contains one of the most perfectly preserved medieval Islamic urban environments on earth: the Umayyad Mosque (built 705 CE on a site used for worship for 3,000 years), the ancient covered souqs of Al-Hamidiyah, and the Straight Street mentioned in the Bible (Acts 9:11). Syria's civil war (2011–present) has caused immense suffering, but Damascus itself has been relatively stable since 2018 under government control. Monitor current advisories carefully.
