Zadar is Croatia's most underrated city, overshadowed by Dubrovnik but offering an equally rich history, a fraction of the crowds, and two of the world's most original public art installations. The Sea Organ (2005) is a series of underwater pipes along the seafront promenade that transform Adriatic wave energy into haunting, ever-changing music, the world's first instrument played by the sea. Next to it, the Greeting to the Sun is a 22-metre disc of 300 solar panels that charges during the day and creates a mesmerising light show at night. The old town (peninsula) holds a complete 2,000-year-old Roman forum, Byzantine churches, and Venetian walls, more history per square metre than almost anywhere in Europe.
