Tripoli Travel Safety Guide — Libya
Safety Score: 4.5/10 · Value: 7.5/10 · Beauty: 5.6/10
Tripoli is North Africa's most undervisited capital, a city with 2,700 years of history, from its Phoenician founding through Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Ottoman, and Italian colonial periods. The Old City (medina) retains remarkable Ottoman-era architecture, and the Red Castle overlooks the harbour with sweeping Mediterranean views. Libya has been in a state of political division and periodic conflict since the 2011 revolution that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. Tripoli (under the Government of National Unity) has been relatively more stable since 2020, but the situation remains complex and requires careful monitoring.
