Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia and one of the Balkans' most surprising cities. A major 2014 urban project filled the centre with neoclassical statues and bridges, polarising but fascinating. The Ottoman Old Bazaar (Čaršija) has been continuous for 500 years. Matka Canyon, 15 km outside the city, is spectacular.
