Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and its most relaxed and cosmopolitan, a Mediterranean port of 4.5 million with a long secular, trading tradition. The ancient city of Ephesus (one of the best-preserved Roman cities on Earth, 80 km south) is the primary draw for international visitors, but Izmir itself rewards exploration: the Kordon waterfront promenade is one of Turkey's finest urban spaces, the Kemeraltı bazaar is more authentic and less tourist-oriented than Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, and Izmir's meze culture, small plates of Aegean vegetables, seafood, and dips eaten with rakı, is extraordinary. The city was rebuilt after 1922 and has a clean, grid-planned centre.
