Gitega became Burundi's official capital in 2019, moved from Bujumbura by President Nkurunziza to reflect the country's geographic and symbolic centre. The highland city sits at 1,600m altitude surrounded by the beautiful rolling green hills of Burundi's interior. Gitega is most famous as the home of the royal drum tradition, the Karyenda sacred drums of the Burundian kingdom, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Bujumbura (80km west) remains the economic capital and the gateway to Lake Tanganyika, one of the world's deepest and longest freshwater lakes.
