Ghent is one of Belgium's most underrated cities, larger and more lived-in than Bruges, less tourist-overwhelmed than Brussels, with a medieval waterfront of guild halls and Flemish townhouses that rivals anywhere in northern Europe. The city's centrepiece is the Ghent Altarpiece (also known as 'The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb', 1432) by Jan van Eyck in St Bavo's Cathedral, arguably the single most important painting in Western art history, featuring the world's first documented use of oil paint. Ghent is also Belgium's student city (Ghent University, 40,000 students) giving it a youthful energy, thriving bar scene, and some of the country's most creative restaurants.
