Da Nang is central Vietnam's coastal boomtown, a clean, modern, fast-growing city with a long sweep of golden beach, a river lined with show-stopping bridges, and the marble Buddhist grottoes of the Marble Mountains on its doorstep. It balances big-city convenience with an easygoing, beachy feel. My Khe Beach is the city's centrepiece, while the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water every weekend night. Just up the coast, the Son Tra peninsula hides the giant Lady Buddha statue and quiet viewpoints; inland, the surreal Golden Bridge held up by giant stone hands draws crowds to the Ba Na Hills resort. Da Nang's food, mì quảng noodles, fresh seafood and bánh mì, is excellent and cheap. Its greatest asset is location: the UNESCO-listed ancient town of Hoi An is 30 minutes south and the imperial city of Hue a couple of hours north. Visit February to August for dry, sunny beach weather; the September–December rainy season can bring typhoons and flooding.
