Barcelona is loud, beautiful and very sure of itself. It is the capital of Catalonia first and Spain second, as locals will happily remind you, and the city wears that identity everywhere. Gaudí's buildings are the obvious draw, the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló, but the real pleasure is just walking: the medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter, the boutiques of El Born, the beach at Barceloneta, and the village feel of Gràcia up the hill. The food is half the trip, from a 7am coffee at La Boqueria to long lunches of tapas and vermouth. One thing worth knowing: the city's real problem is pickpocketing, not violence. Keep your phone in a front pocket and your bag zipped on Las Ramblas, the metro and the beach, and you will be fine.
